NEW PROJECT ON ORAL HEALTH : (posted Mar 5, 2010)
The AAP invites you to participate in an innovative project that we believe will have a significant impact on children's oral health. The project, "Brightening Oral Health: Implementing Oral Health Risk Assessments in Pediatric Care" will provide pediatricians and their staffs with the tools and resources necessary to identify children at risk for dental caries. Clinical teams will implement an oral health risk assessment tool for 9-12 month olds. This project is part of the Bright Futures initiative at the AAP, an approach that is dedicated to the principle that every child deserves to be healthy and that optimal health involves a trusting relationship between the health professional, the child, the family, and the community. This project is supported by Procter and Gamble: Live Learn Thrive and managed by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Selected projects will be remunerated with a $500 stipend.
We are looking for primary care practice teams that serve a predominately Hispanic population. Typically these teams will include a physician and a nurse, and perhaps administrative or office staff as well. Participants should have a willingness and commitment to work with their teams to improve care and an interest in sharing learnings with other project participants.
During this 7 month project, teams will be asked to use a systematic approach oral health risk assessment, through the use of improvement science methods, including measurement. A pediatrician tested oral health risk assessment tool will be implemented. Teams will take part in a two hour web-based improvement workshop (likely late February/early March) and participate in monthly conference calls to work together with other participants on challenges and successful strategies. In April practices will be asked to help plan and participate in an oral health training in their community.
We believe there will be many benefits for participants involved in this nationally recognized project. Teams will have the opportunity:
· To test strategies for improving care that will become a national model
· To work with colleagues from around the country
· To learn from national experts
Attached please find a more detailed description of expectations for project participants. To apply for the project, please fill out the project application available at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Z3DHL5Z. Preference will be given to those applications received by March 15, 2010. Selected practices will be notified by March 30, 2010.
